The New Zealand Resuscitation Council and the wider medical community are mourning the loss of Dr. Tonia Nicholson, an internationally respected emergency physician and resuscitation expert who passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 58.
Dr. Nicholson devoted more than two decades of distinguished service to the New Zealand Resuscitation Council, where she represented the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) and served in several leadership positions, including Secretary and Treasurer on the Executive Committee. Throughout her career, she earned widespread admiration for her unwavering commitment to advancing emergency medicine and evidence-based resuscitation practices.
Her influence extended well beyond New Zealand. Dr. Nicholson played a pivotal role in developing the ANZCOR Adult Advanced Life Support (ALS) Guidelines, contributing significantly to lifesaving science across Australia and New Zealand. She also served for more than a decade on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Adult Advanced Life Support Task Force, helping shape global resuscitation standards and ensuring New Zealand remained at the forefront of international emergency care research.
In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, the New Zealand Resuscitation Council recently awarded Dr. Nicholson the Sir David Hay Medal, the organization’s highest honor for outstanding service to resuscitation and emergency care in Aotearoa New Zealand. The award reflected not only her exceptional professional achievements but also her generosity, humility, and lifelong dedication to improving patient outcomes around the world.
Beyond her remarkable career, Dr. Nicholson was a devoted wife to her late husband, Grant, and a loving mother to Lily, Lani, and Tom. She was also a cherished daughter to Sue and Archie and a beloved sister to Jennifer. Her family, friends, colleagues, and countless patients will remember her not only for her medical excellence but also for her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering kindness.
A funeral service celebrating Dr. Tonia Nicholson’s life will be held at Seddon Park Funeral Home, 49 Seddon Road, Hamilton, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24.
Her legacy will continue through the countless healthcare professionals she mentored, the international guidelines she helped shape, and the lives that have been saved because of her tireless work.
